Contributor / Freelancer Guidelines

A contributor guidelines document gives external writers, subject matter experts, and agency partners the context a full-time employee absorbs over months: the brand's purpose, the audience, the editorial standards, what topics are in and out of scope, the submission and revision process, and how payment or credit works. The investment in writing it once is paid back in every engagement that doesn't require a full briefing call and three rounds of foundational revision.

The document external writers and SMEs need to produce work that fits.

When to use this

  • When onboarding a new freelancer, agency, or SME contributor, before they write a single word.
  • When a brand has reached the point where most content is produced externally and internal editors are primarily curators.
  • When contributor quality is inconsistent and you need to raise the floor without expanding the full-time team.
