Idea Backlog + Prioritization (RICE/ICE)

An idea backlog is a running list of content concepts, each scored against a prioritization framework. RICE (Reach, Impact, Confidence, Effort) was developed at Intercom for product roadmapping and translates cleanly to content. The score is a starting point for judgment, not a replacement for it, a high-RICE piece with poor strategic timing or low team energy still requires a human call.

A scored list that ensures the highest-value content gets made first.

Reach × Impact × Confidence ÷ Effort = Priority score

When to use this

  • When the content backlog is longer than realistic capacity and the team debates which ideas to prioritize.
  • When resources are constrained and making the case for investment requires showing expected return per piece.
  • When balancing quick wins (high RICE, low effort) against foundational assets (lower RICE, high strategic value).
