Content Audit + Inventory
A content audit combines two tasks: inventory (cataloging everything that exists, URLs, titles, formats, owners) and assessment (judging each asset against quality, performance, and strategic criteria). The output is a disposition per asset: keep, revise, consolidate, or kill. Running the audit without a disposition framework produces a spreadsheet; running it with one produces a plan. Meghan Casey's Content Strategy Toolkit is the definitive book of these templates.
A full census and quality assessment of every asset you own.
Keep / Revise / Consolidate / Kill
When to use this
- Before any redesign or CMS migration, you cannot make good structural decisions without a working idea of what content exists.
- When quality feels inconsistent and you need quantifiable evidence of where the problems are concentrated.
- Before establishing a governance model, to set the baseline you will be held to going forward.
