Content Matrix / Content Map
A content matrix intersects audience segments, funnel stages, content formats, and topics to reveal where assets exist and where they are missing. It is simultaneously a gap analysis tool, a planning scaffold, and a governance document, any piece added to the calendar should have a cell in the matrix. Teams that plan without a matrix tend to over-produce for one stage (usually awareness) and ignore the rest.
The grid: audience segment, funnel stage, format, and topic.
Audience × Stage × Format × Topic = Content plan
When to use this
- When content planning happens by brainstorm rather than by systematically mapping what each audience needs at each stage.
- To brief writers, designers, and agencies with structural context, not just a topic, but where it lives in the program at a glance.
